Windscreen PPF & Windscreen Protection Film in Berkshire

Your windscreen is one of the most exposed and expensive pieces of glass on your vehicle. Every motorway journey leaves it vulnerable to stones, road debris, scratches and impacts that can quickly turn a small chip into a cracked windscreen.

Our Windscreen Protection Film, commonly referred to as Windscreen PPF, adds a virtually transparent sacrificial layer over the exterior of the original glass.

Designed specifically for automotive windscreens, the film helps absorb impacts from stones and road debris before they reach the glass underneath, reducing the risk of chips, scratches and cracks.

Windscreen PPF starts from £399 including VAT, professionally installed at our studio in Finchampstead, Berkshire, near Reading and Wokingham.

What Is Windscreen Protection Film?

Windscreen Protection Film is a specialist transparent film installed on the outside surface of the windscreen.

You may also see it described online as Windscreen PPF, WPF, windshield protection film, windshield PPF or automotive glass protection film. While the phrase Windscreen PPF is widely used, the film itself is specifically engineered for exterior automotive glass rather than simply being conventional paint protection film applied to a windscreen.

Once fitted, the film creates a sacrificial protective surface between the original glass and the outside world.

When a small stone or piece of road debris strikes an unprotected windscreen, all of that impact is transferred directly into the glass. Windscreen protection film is designed to help absorb and disperse some of that impact before it reaches the windscreen underneath.

It cannot make a windscreen completely impact-proof, but it can significantly reduce its exposure to the everyday damage responsible for chips, pitting and cracks.

Protect Your Original Windscreen from Stone Chips

One of the biggest advantages of windscreen stone chip protection is the opportunity to preserve the original factory glass.

A windscreen replacement is no longer necessarily as straightforward as removing one piece of glass and installing another.

Many modern vehicles incorporate cameras and driver-assistance technology around the windscreen. Depending on the vehicle, replacement can involve additional calibration work as well as the cost of the new glass itself.

There is also value in simply leaving a correctly installed factory windscreen alone.

The original glass, bonding and factory fit have already proved watertight and properly aligned. Applying a removable sacrificial layer over that glass allows you to protect it rather than waiting for a stone chip or crack to force a replacement.

Particularly Useful for Expensive or Difficult-to-Replace Glass

Windscreen PPF can make particular sense for performance cars, supercars, classic vehicles, specialist cars and vehicles fitted with expensive or difficult-to-source windscreens.

It is also useful for normal daily-driven cars that regularly cover motorway miles.

You do not need to own an exotic car for windscreen protection to make sense. A modern daily driver travelling regularly on the M4, M3, M25 or A404 can spend thousands of miles directly behind traffic throwing small stones and road debris towards the glass.

A Sacrificial Layer for Your Windscreen

The principle is similar to the reason we use Paint Protection Film on vehicle paintwork.

Rather than allowing the original surface to take the damage, a replaceable film takes the abuse instead.

The windscreen film becomes the sacrificial surface exposed to stone impacts, minor scratches, road contamination, insects and the constant abrasion associated with normal driving.

If the film eventually becomes heavily worn or damaged, it can be removed and replaced while the original glass underneath has benefited from that additional layer of protection.

This is an important distinction. Windscreen protection film is not intended to be permanent. Its purpose is to sacrifice itself in order to help preserve a considerably more expensive component underneath.

Hydrophobic Windscreen Protection and Water Beading

Physical protection is only part of the benefit.

The surface of the windscreen film is strongly hydrophobic, meaning water has much greater difficulty spreading and clinging to the surface.

Instead, rain forms into defined beads that move across and clear from the windscreen more readily as the vehicle travels, reducing your reliance on using the wiper blades.

Better Water Behaviour in Wet Weather

This water-repellent behaviour can be particularly noticeable during motorway driving and heavier rainfall.

Rather than water sitting relatively flat across untreated glass, the hydrophobic surface encourages it to form smaller beads and move away from the driver's field of vision.

It also makes the windscreen easier to clean because insects, road grime and contamination have a protective surface to bond to rather than the original glass itself.

Your windscreen wipers should, of course, still be used whenever required for safe visibility.
