How Much Does Paint Correction Cost? (2026 UK Guide)

How Much Does Paint Correction Cost? (2026 UK Guide)

Written by Jay Bridges, a Detailing and PPF Specialist with over 15 years of experience.

The cost of professional paint correction in the UK can vary from a few hundred pounds to well over £1,000.

That is a wide range, but paint correction is not a single fixed service.

A lightly marked hatchback requiring one polishing stage will take considerably less time than a large black SUV with heavy swirl marks, deeper scratches and previous bodyshop repairs.

The number of polishing stages, condition of the paintwork, size of the vehicle and protection included all affect the final paint correction price.

At On Track Detailing, our professional paint correction services start from £750 including VAT. Every package includes detailed preparation and a professional 3 year ceramic coating to protect the corrected finish.

This guide explains what you should expect to pay in 2026, why quotations vary and how to decide which level of correction is appropriate for your car.

What Drives the Price?

Most professional detailers price paint correction according to the amount of preparation, polishing and finishing work required.

Two similar-looking cars can require very different processes once inspected under specialist lighting.

A reliable quotation should consider the condition of the vehicle rather than simply its make, model or value.

For us, the brand of vehicle has zero impact on the cost. Just because it has a fancy badge doesn't mean the cost automatically goes higher. It's purely based on the complexity and time requirements of the job.

Paint Condition

The current condition of the paintwork is usually the most important factor.

A relatively well-maintained car may only have:

  • Light swirl marks
  • Minor wash marring
  • Reduced gloss
  • Fine surface defects

This may be suitable for a single-stage correction.

A poorly maintained vehicle might have:

  • Heavy circular swirl marks
  • Deep scratches
  • Water-spot etching
  • Machine polishing holograms
  • Sanding marks from previous repairs
  • Uneven or poorly refinished panels

These defects take longer to assess and correct. Some may require several cutting and refining stages to remove, while others cannot be safely removed completely.

Paint correction works by carefully refining the upper layer of clear coat. Because the available clear coat is finite, the aim should be to achieve the best safe improvement rather than chase every mark regardless of the consequences.

Not sure how severe the damage is? Send us a few clear photographs or arrange a free paintwork inspection before choosing a package.

Number of Stages

The term “stage” generally describes how many separate machine-polishing processes are completed across the vehicle. However, a "Stage" Polish is in itself an entirely un-regulated term and can be very confusing to compare from company to company.

Gloss Enhancement

A gloss enhancement uses a relatively light polishing combination to improve clarity and shine.

It can reduce some very light marks, but the focus is appearance rather than extensive defect removal.

This is an excellent cost-focused service, we offer a Package called the One Day Detail, with an up to 2 Year Ceramic Coating for just £499 to cater for people who would just like an easier to maintain car.

Single-Stage Paint Correction

A single-stage correction uses one carefully selected combination of polishing pad and compound across the vehicle.

It must provide enough cutting ability to reduce defects while still leaving a clear, refined finish.

At On Track Detailing, our Single Stage Paint Correction starts from £750, usually takes two to three days and typically targets around 60-70% defect removal, depending on the paint.

Two-Stage Paint Correction

A two-stage correction separates the cutting and refining processes.

The first stage tackles swirl marks, scratches and heavier defects. A second stage then refines the surface to remove haze and restore clarity, gloss and colour depth.

Our Two Stage Paint Correction starts from £950 and usually takes three to four days. It is our most popular correction package and typically targets around 85% defect removal where the paint condition allows.

Multi-Stage Paint Correction

A multi-stage correction is intended for heavily marked vehicles or owners seeking the best finish that can safely be achieved.

Different machines, pads, compounds and localised techniques may be used across individual panels.

Our Multi Stage Paint Correction starts from £1,200 and normally requires four to six days. Where paint condition and thickness allow, it can achieve more than 98% defect removal.

Wet sanding and more advanced restoration work are assessed and priced separately.

Our Paint Correction and Enhancement page explains each package in more detail and includes examples of the results they are designed to achieve.

Car Size and Colour

Larger vehicles generally cost more because they have a greater surface area and take longer to wash, decontaminate, mask, polish and protect.

A compact hatchback will usually require less time than:

  • A large SUV
  • A long-wheelbase luxury saloon
  • A van
  • A vehicle with complex bumpers and body lines
  • A car with extensive gloss-black or carbon-fibre trim

Colour can affect the workload too.

Solid black and darker metallic finishes show fine defects, polishing haze and residue very clearly. They often require a slower refining process to achieve a crisp finish.

Lighter colours can hide minor defects more effectively, although the underlying damage may still be present.

Paint hardness also varies. Some finishes correct relatively quickly, while harder clear coats may require more cutting time. Softer paint can introduce its own challenges because it may mark or haze easily during refinement.

Previous body repairs are another consideration. Repainted panels can behave differently from the original factory finish and should be inspected carefully before polishing.

Typical Paint Correction Price Ranges

Across the wider UK market, advertised prices vary considerably. Current published guides place professional correction anywhere from approximately £250 to £2000 or higher, depending on the service level, vehicle and provider.

The figures below reflect our current packages for a typical-sized vehicle:

All of our prices are inclusive of VAT.

Our full paint correction packages include a professional Multi-year ceramic coatings, with longer-lasting coating upgrades available if required.

The final quotation can vary depending on the size and complexity of the vehicle, the condition of the paintwork and whether additional work is needed. Heavily contaminated cars, previous poor-quality repairs, extensive gloss-black trim, overspray or localised wet sanding can all increase the time involved.

Additional services such as deep interior cleaning, wheel coating, glass protection or other surface treatments can also be added to the package.

A written quotation should clearly explain what preparation, correction and protection are included, so you can compare services properly rather than looking at price alone.

Why Do Some Companies Advertise Paint Correction for £200-£300?

You will find services advertised as “full paint correction” or “detailing and ceramic coating” for £200-£300.

At first glance that can look like excellent value. The issue is that the description does not always reflect what most professional detailers would consider a complete correction package.

At this price point, the service may be closer to a quick single-pass machine polish or gloss enhancement than a true multi-day correction. In some cases, fillers or polishing oils can temporarily disguise defects, making the paint look better initially without actually removing as much damage as the customer expects.

It may also be difficult to include a genuinely professional ceramic coating once labour, preparation and product costs are taken into account. Depending on the coating used, the product cost alone can be significant.

At the lower end of the market, you may also be comparing a part-time or mobile service with a full-time, VAT-registered business. That does not automatically mean the work will be poor, but the facilities, insurance cover, equipment and amount of time allocated to the vehicle can be very different.

Lower-cost packages may only allow a few hours for the entire job. That can mean less time spent on decontamination, paint inspection, masking, test polishing and refinement. The protection included may also be a shorter-term sealant or entry-level product rather than a longer-lasting professional ceramic coating.

There is nothing wrong with a properly described enhancement service.

The concern is when a quick machine polish is marketed as the equivalent of a two-to-four-day professional paint correction. There is no shortcut around the preparation, inspection and polishing time required to carry out proper correction safely.

Preparation Takes Time

A proper decontamination can easily take 2-3 Hours before even picking up the polisher.

The vehicle needs to be safely washed, chemically decontaminated and inspected. Tar, iron fallout and bonded contamination should be dealt with, while vulnerable trims need to be protected before polishing begins.

Paint-depth measurements and a test section are also important because they help determine how aggressively the paint can be worked and which polishing combination will achieve the best safe result.

Skipping or rushing these stages can affect both the finish and the safety of the process.

Low Prices Can Create Unrealistic Expectations

A customer may expect deeper scratches and heavy swirl marks to disappear, while the detailer has only allowed enough time / skill for a quick gloss improvement.

The car can still look noticeably better when it is first collected, particularly under indoor lighting or when polishing oils and filling products remain on the paintwork.

Once those products have washed away, however, some of the original defects may become visible again.

That is why it is important to understand whether you are paying for a gloss enhancement, a genuine single-stage correction or a more intensive multi-stage process.

Aggressive Polishing Is Not a Shortcut

Trying to achieve heavy defect removal within an unrealistically short timeframe can create its own problems.

Excessive cutting can remove more clear coat than necessary, while rushed refinement may leave behind haze, holograms or inconsistent correction between panels. Poor masking and hurried finishing can also result in polish residue around badges, trims and panel edges.

An example of Dual Action Hazing due to extremely heavy polishing without suitable refinement

A professional correction should balance defect removal with paint preservation.

The aim is not simply to remove as much clear coat as possible. It is to achieve the best safe improvement while leaving enough material for the paintwork to remain healthy in the future.

A responsible detailer should explain what can realistically be achieved within the price and time allowed.

For customers who want improved gloss and ceramic protection but do not need extensive swirl removal, our One Day Detail starts from £499 including VAT. It is openly positioned as a one-day exterior enhancement rather than a full paint correction.

Ask any detailer how long the vehicle will be worked on, how many polishing stages are included and what protection is applied afterwards. The answers usually explain much of the price difference.

Enhancement vs Full Correction: What Is the Cost Difference?

A paint enhancement and a full paint correction can both involve machine polishing, but they are designed to achieve different outcomes.

Paint Enhancement

A paint enhancement focuses primarily on improving gloss, restoring colour depth and preparing the paintwork for protection. Some very light marks may also be reduced during the process, but defect removal is not the main aim.

It is well suited to vehicles that already look reasonably presentable, or for owners whose priority is a cleaner, glossier finish that is easier to maintain.

Typical benefits include:

  • Improved gloss and colour depth
  • Smoother, cleaner paintwork
  • Reduction of some very light marks
  • Proper preparation before ceramic protection

Our One Day Detail combines full exterior preparation, a gloss-enhancing machine polish and up to 2 Years of ceramic paint protection from £499 including VAT

Paint Correction

Paint correction places much greater emphasis on removing or reducing visible defects.

It involves more inspection, testing and machine-polishing time. Depending on the condition of the paintwork and the package selected, the vehicle may receive one, two or several polishing stages.

Paint correction is usually more appropriate when swirl marks are clearly visible in sunlight, the paint looks dull despite being clean, or there are scratches, holograms and other machine-polishing defects.

It is also the better choice when achieving the best possible finish is a priority, particularly before applying longer-term ceramic protection or Paint Protection Film.

The £250 difference between our One Day Detail and Single Stage Paint Correction reflects considerably more than an additional polishing.

The Single Stage package allows two to three days for more extensive preparation and correction work, and finishes with a professional three-year ceramic coating rather than shorter-term protection.

For a daily driver in reasonable condition, or where protection is the priority instead of correction - The One Day Detail may provide everything you need. If visible swirl marks and scratches are the main concern, then our more intensive paint correction packages may be of benefit.

Does Minor Paint Correction Cost Less?

The phrase minor paint correction can mean different things depending on the detailer and the condition of the vehicle.

It may describe a light correction across the whole car, localised polishing of one or two panels, or attention to a specific scuff, scratch or area of dealership preparation damage.

For example, minor correction might include:

  • A light machine polish across the vehicle
  • Localised work on a bonnet or door
  • Improving a specific scuff or isolated defect
  • Correcting light damage on a recently repainted panel

Localised work can cost less than correcting an entire vehicle, but the size of the affected area does not always determine how straightforward the repair will be.

A small scratch may require very little polishing, while another of similar size may have penetrated too deeply into the clear coat to be safely removed. If the damage reaches the base colour or has compromised the paint completely, a bodyshop repair may be the only proper solution.

Photographs can usually give us an initial indication, although some defects need to be inspected in person before we can recommend the right approach.

Is Paint Correction Worth It Before Selling a Car?

It depends on the vehicle, its value and the current condition of the paintwork.

A professionally corrected car can present significantly better in photographs and during viewings. Cleaner, glossier paintwork can also make a vehicle appear better maintained and help it stand out against similar examples for sale.

For desirable, enthusiast-owned, prestige or higher-value cars, correcting heavily swirled or tired paintwork may help support a stronger asking price and make the vehicle easier to sell.

However, spending £1,000 or more on extensive correction immediately before selling a relatively low-value everyday vehicle will not always produce an equivalent financial return.

In those circumstances, a lighter enhancement may make more sense.

Our One Day Detail is particularly suitable when the aim is to improve presentation, restore gloss and add protection without paying for extensive defect removal.

The decision should be based on the likely return and the type of buyer you are trying to attract, rather than simply choosing the highest level of correction available.

If you are preparing a car for sale, tell us the model, approximate value and current condition. We can advise whether a one-day enhancement or a fuller correction is the more proportionate option.

Is Paint Correction Worth the Cost?

For many owners, yes - particularly when the condition of the paintwork is noticeably affecting the appearance of an otherwise good vehicle.

Professional paint correction can restore clarity, gloss and colour depth while substantially reducing years of swirl marks, wash damage and other surface defects.

It tends to make the most sense when:

  • You have recently bought a used vehicle and want to improve it
  • You plan to keep the car for several years
  • The existing paint condition bothers you
  • You own a rare, classic or enthusiast vehicle
  • You want the paint corrected before ceramic coating or PPF
  • Repainting would be unnecessary or disproportionately expensive

Paint correction does have limitations.

Stone chips, clear-coat failure, very deep scratches, dents and poor previous bodyshop repairs cannot always be solved through polishing alone. Those issues may require touch-in work, Paintless Dent Removal or conventional paint repair.

A professional inspection should identify these limitations before any work is agreed, so you know what can realistically be improved and where further repair may be required.

Ultimately, if you inspect the pictures below - You can make your own mind up if Paint Correction is worth the cost..

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does paint correction cost in the UK?

Professional car paint correction cost in the UK commonly ranges from around £400 for lighter services to £2,000 or more for advanced work, although advertised prices and package contents vary considerably.

At On Track Detailing, prices currently start from £750 Including VAT for a Single Stage Paint Correction, £950 for a Two Stage and £1,200 for a Multi Stage package. All include VAT and a professional three-year ceramic coating.

Can paint correction remove every scratch?

No.

Swirl marks and light scratches can often be substantially reduced or removed. Scratches that have penetrated deeply through the clear coat may only be improved rather than eliminated.

Trying to remove every defect can require an unsafe amount of clear-coat removal.

Is a single-stage correction enough?

It may be sufficient for a vehicle with light to moderate defects.

Cars with heavier wash damage, deeper scratches, oxidation or polishing holograms may require two or more stages.

The safest way to choose is through an inspection and test section.

Does paint correction include ceramic coating?

This depends on the provider.

All On Track Detailing paint correction details include a professional ceramic coating with either 2, 3 , 5 or 7 Years of Durability depending on the package.

How long does paint correction take?

A light gloss enhancement can usually be done in One day. A professional single-stage correction may take two to three days. Two-stage work usually requires three to four days, while multi-stage correction can take four to six days or longer. Advanced wet sanding may require up to two weeks.

Will the swirl marks come back?

Paint correction permanently removes or reduces defects by refining the clear coat. It does not stop new marks from being introduced.

Unsafe washing, automatic brush washes, poor "hand car washes" and poor drying techniques can create fresh marks. Correct maintenance is essential after the work is complete, and with the correct processes, swirl marks will stay away for years.

Can a new car need paint correction?

Yes.

New vehicles can arrive with light wash marks, polishing residue, sanding marks, adhesive contamination or defects caused during dealership preparation.

The required correction is often lighter than on an older vehicle, but the paint should still be inspected before protection is applied.

What is the difference between a part-time mobile detailer and a full-time, VAT-registered detailing studio?

Both can provide a useful service, and the quality ultimately depends on the individual business. However, the way each operates can affect pricing, facilities, availability and the type of work they are equipped to undertake.

A part-time mobile detailer may have lower overheads and may not be VAT registered, which can make the advertised price appear considerably cheaper. This can be suitable for maintenance valeting, lighter enhancement work and customers who value the convenience of work being completed at home.

A full-time studio-based detailer carries the ongoing costs of dedicated premises, specialist lighting, professional equipment, insurance, staffing and VAT. The controlled indoor environment also allows paint correction and ceramic coating work to be completed away from rain, direct sunlight, dust and changing temperatures.

When comparing quotations, check what is actually included, how much time has been allocated, what insurance is in place, whether VAT is included and what aftercare is available if a problem develops. The lowest advertised price may not represent the same process, protection or level of service.

Choosing the Right Paint Correction Service

There is no single correct paint correction price for every vehicle. The amount of work required can vary considerably depending on the condition, size and complexity of the car, as well as the level of improvement you are looking to achieve.

A fair quotation should take into account the condition of the paintwork, the number of polishing stages required and the time needed to complete the work safely. It should also be clear about how much preparation is included and what protection will be applied afterwards.

For example, two similar cars may require completely different approaches if one has been carefully maintained while the other has years of swirl marks, scratches or previous poor-quality polishing.

The important thing is to compare like for like. A lower price may represent a perfectly suitable enhancement, while a more expensive service may include several days of correction, refinement and longer-term ceramic protection.

Likewise not every detailer operates to the same standards or in the same environment. A good detailer should be able to explain what you are paying for, what level of improvement you can realistically expect and why a particular package is appropriate for your vehicle.

At On Track Detailing, we always try to assess each vehicle individually and explain the achievable result before work begins.

Explore our Paint Correction and Enhancement services, or consider The One Day Detail if your priority is improved gloss, ceramic protection and a same-day turnaround.
