What is Paint Protection Film?

Paint Protection Film (often shortened to PPF) is a clear, self-healing urethane layer that’s applied to your vehicle’s paintwork to help protect it from scratches, swirl marks, stone chips and general wear. It acts as an invisible barrier between your car’s paint and the elements, offering physical protection without changing the appearance of your vehicle.

You might also hear it referred to as clear bra, paint film, clear film, or simply car film but they all mean the same thing: a high-performance protective layer that keeps your vehicle looking its best for longer.

PPF works by absorbing the impact from road debris, grit, and light abrasions. Thanks to its self-healing properties, minor marks and swirls disappear with heat, from the sun or warm water making it especially useful for daily drivers, track cars and new vehicles you want to preserve from day one.

At On Track Detailing, we install ProFilm PPF, a premium-grade material that delivers excellent clarity, durability and edge-sealing performance. Whether you’re looking to protect just the front of your car or go for a full-body application, PPF offers long-term peace of mind.If you’d like to see how PPF looks once installed, visit our Portfolio to explore past projects on performance, luxury and daily vehicles.

PPF vs Ceramic Coating

Key Differences

Paint Protection Film (PPF) and ceramic coating are both popular ways to protect your car’s paintwork. They serve different purposes, and choosing the right one depends on how you use your vehicle and what level of protection you're looking for.

PPF is a physical, self-healing film that acts as a barrier between your car’s paint and the environment. It protects against stone chips, scratches, swirl marks and scuffs, making it ideal for track cars, daily drivers and vehicles exposed to harsh conditions.

Ceramic coating, is a liquid-based coating that bonds chemically with your car’s surface. It adds hydrophobic (water-repellent) and UV-resistant properties, making your car easier to clean while enhancing gloss, but it doesn’t provide the same level of physical impact protection as PPF.

In many cases, the best solution is to combine both. PPF for high-impact areas, and ceramic coating over the top for added gloss and ease of maintenance.
